– The Kutztown University men's basketball team fell to Holy Family University, 91-75, on Tuesday night in its home opener at Keystone Arena. Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian)
led the way for the Golden Bears, scoring 21 points and handing out five assists.
Despite holding a lead for the first the 22 minutes of action, KU fell victim to missed shots, turnovers and a 27-9 run by the Tigers to open up the second half. HFU gained a 44-42 lead at the 17:08 mark and never looked back, building a lead as large as 18 points with just over six minutes left.
The offense struggled to get rolling in the second half after coming out of the break with a six-point advantage. Fraction was the lone Golden Bear to score more than six points in the second as the Tigers clamped down on the defensive end.
It was a tale of two halves for the Maroon and Gold as it shot 48 percent from the floor in the first and just 34 percent in the second, including 2-of-13 from beyond three. The squad also turned the ball over 13 times in the second half, allowing Holy Family score 30 points off of turnovers, including a 12-4 edge in fast break points. had the hot hand in the first half, scoring 13 points, shooting 3-of-4 from three-point range and picking up six rebounds. His first half effort was helped out by Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone)
who scored seven of his nine in the first 20 minutes.
The Golden Bears controlled the glass for a majority of the game, outrebounding the Tigers, 38-34, and held a clear advantage on the offensive boards, ripping down nine to HFU's three. The Tigers outshot Kutztown, 49 percent to 40 percent and turned the ball over 16 times as KU turned it over on 22 occasions.
Alberto Munoz paced all scorers on the evening with 24 points, while Ervin Ezell added 23, hitting 11-of-12 from the free throw stripe and dishing out 10 assists. Isaiah Gans posted a double-double on the night with 13 points and 11 boards as Eric Fleming added 14 points and Angel Ayala had 11 of his own.
The Golden Bears will return to play when they head to Erie, Pa. for a PSAC crossover to face Gannon on Saturday (12/1) and Mercyhurst (12/2) on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
