Clarion men get first win of season against Houghton
CLARION, Pa. Behind career nights from Leonard Patterson and Mike Kromka, the Clarion University men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, 77-67, over Houghton Tuesday night at Tippin Gym.
Patterson scored a career-high 21 points while Kromka had a monster double-double with 19 points and a career-best 16 rebounds, including 10 offensive rebounds.
Clarion led by 13, 51-38, midway through the second half thanks to a 17-5 run that saw the Golden Eagles (1-2) hold the Highlanders (0-4) without a basket from the 18-minute mark to the 11:51 mark.
But Houghton fought back using a 22-8 run to take its first lead since early in the first half, 61-60, on an old-school three-point play by Mark O'Brien with 5:28 left.
Clarion, however, had the answer in the form of a 10-1 run that started with a Kromka layup and featured six points from Patterson to go ahead 70-62 with 1:10 to play. The Highlanders never got closer than five the rest of the way.
Marques Jones added 11 points for Clarion who also got eight points, five rebounds and two assists off the bench from Evan Battle.
O'Brien led Houghton with 15 points, while Chris Confair had 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench. Cullen Overholt added 10 points and Matthew Ball six points and nine rebounds.
Clarion led 30-29 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday when they host Shippensburg in the PSAC opener.
