No. 19 Temple puts the Clamps on the Dukes

Feb. 3, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Lavoy Allen had 14 points and 15 rebounds and Ramone Moore added a game-high 15 points as No. 19 (AP) Temple put the clamps on Duquesne in the second half in a 76-60 win at the Liacouras Center.

The win upped Temple's overall record to 19-4 (7-1 in the Atlantic 10). The victory was the Owls' seventh-straight over the Dukes at home. Duquesne, which hasn't won at Temple since 1995, dropped to 11-11 overall and 2-6 in the A-10.

Bill Clark and Eric Evans led Duquesne with 12 points each.

The Owls led 47-40 before holding the Dukes to five points over the next 10-plus minutes in building their lead to 27 points at 72-45 with 5:52 left.

"We took some ill-advised shots and fell behind," said Duquesne head coach Ron Everhart. "Whenever you play a team like Temple, they can expose you in a lot of areas and they did that tonight."

Temple, which missed just eight shots in the second half (12-of-20) outrebounded the Dukes 35-19. The Owls scored 23 points off 11 Duquesne turnovers.

Duquesne, which scored 10 points in the game's first three minutes in jumping out to a 10-2 lead, scored just 50 the rest of the way against a Temple defense that entered the game ranked among the nation's top 10 in scoring defense (5th), 3-point shooting percentage defense (5th) and field goal percentage defense (9th).

"I wasn't happy with how we played offensively, but a lot of that had to do with Temple's defense," said Everhart.

Temple took the lead for good on a Scootie Randall 3-pointer with 7:39 left in the first half. The Owls led by 11 before Clark closed the half with a 3-pointer to make it 42-34.

DU cut it to six on a Damian Saunders free throw early in the second half, but could get no closer the rest of the way.

Temple shot a Duquesne opponent high 57.1 percent on a DU opponent low 49 field goal attempts.

Duquesne shot 44.2 percent, including 6-of-20 from the 3-point arc.

Duquesne will head to directly to Washington, D.C. on Thursday morning for Saturday's game at George Washington on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2:00 p.m.

NOTES

Damian Saunders, who entered the game ranked tied for second nationally with 16 double-doubles, finished with nine points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals ... the six assists (with zero turnovers) tied his career high set in his first game at DU, a 129-59 win over Howard.

• Duquesne is now 5-20 all-time at Temple ... the Owls have won 15 of the past 17 meetings, including the last eight in Philadelphia ... DU's last win at Temple was on Jan. 30, 1995 (62-55).

• Temple entered the game ranked among the nation's top 10 in scoring defense (5th), 3-point shooting percentage defense (5th) and field goal percentage defense (9th).
